Whispers from the past

· Journal

I got a call from Shawna Anderson on Monday of last week. It was a trip to hear her and what has happened to her. It sounds as if she has been married at least twice. I think the rumors that she was a stripper might be false, because she said that she left Anderson, IN for a while when she married the first time. Apparently that marriage involved a lot of drugs and ended when her husband shook the one girl that they had and gave her brain damage. Apparently he and Shawna (who was pregnant with another girl at the time) went to jail. Shawna got out right before the girl was born, while he got 20 years. Part of her release was that she had to give up rights to both the girls and her parents (blood father, step mother) adopted them both.

She apparently got pregnant again relatively quickly because she said she had a son that was about to turn 8 or maybe 9 and she has only been out of school for 11 years if she graduated in 95. I am not sure who the father of this kid is, but I know that isn’t the man that she is married to now, because she says that he treats their kid the same as the 9 year old. I think she said their kid was 4. Apparently sometime after that she has had some form of cancer that has left her unable to have any more children.

She talked like she wasn’t all that happy with her current relationship, saying that it was more like a friendship than anything else. She also said that she was on disability for “post traumatic stress syndrome” from having seen that happen to the first little girl.

Apparently our relationship was a big moment in her life, because she still knew when my birthday was and just the general gist of her comments made me feel that way. She also talked of some supposed wrong that she had done to me and how it took her a lot of time to get up the nerve to call me about it. I am somewhat unsure of what that might have been, unless it is that she ended up dating someone else while I was down here in Kentucky. I guess I didn’t really see that as a slight since if you were to ask my parents that was what they had me down here for anyway. They don’t really make any bones about it and I had always just accepted that as what had happened. I told her that I had no ill will toward her and that I was glad to hear that she had quit with drugs and was doing better. That was when she told me the stuff about her husband. All and all an interesting call and I guess a final validation to the things that my parents saw in her when it was all going down.
