Rebirth - Prologue

· Junk

Kyle busted through the doors to the bar and drew his 9mm. He aimed it squarely into Gesatule’s head. Two goons from a nearby table jumped up and lunged toward Kyle’s right side. Unfortunately for them, Kyle was a lefty. Raising his right hand, with his aim never leaving Gesatule’s head, an arc of electricity left his hand and traveled the two feet to the closest goon’s chest. The bolt slammed him back into his partner and into a table behind them. Kyle returned his full attention to the 9mm, starting the caress of the trigger that would end the life of the village killer that sat less than four feet in front of him. Perhaps that would end the pain of the death of his family at this man’s hands.

Thresh had been setting at a table next to the door when the crazy man with the 1980’s punk mohawk had busted in. He had been casing the place and was getting ready to bust his mark, Gesatule. When he saw the teenager bust in, he knew that his plan was going to have to change rapidly. When the kid took a bead on his mark, well that called for something drastic. Gesatule was worth less money dead, and worth nothing if he was killed by someone else. Thresh didn’t have time to see what had happened to the two goons across the room. All he saw was a bright flash and he took that as his cue to move into action. From behind and to the left of the kid he struck out at his left hand and connected right below the elbow, right as the kid pulled the trigger…

…and missed. Damnit!!! Where had that guy come from. He hadn’t came in with Gesatule. Kyle had watched Gesatule enter with just his two goons. Taking the force of the blow in stride, Kyle spun toward his right… right in line with the second goon who had started to get up from the shattered table. Dropping to one knee he lined up a new shot and fired off two rounds into the goon. Two shots struck home in his chest. Kicking back with his leg, Kyle knocked the unknown attacker off his feet.

Damn this kid was quick. He had picked up the downed goon quick and took the hit without much of a hitch. Thresh has just started to bring his fist down on the kid’s neck when his foot shot out from under him. It was a lucky thing that it did to. The area that was previously occupied by Thresh’s chest was now only occupied by his shoulder and microseconds later had an added occupant of a 9mm bullet. Thresh hit the ground hard, flat on his back. He could feel a burning in his left tricep and was sure that was were the bullet had hit. Thresh heard his Glock slide across the floor, but could still feel his handcuffs biting into his lower back and he moved his hand to grab them.

Kyle heard the shot from Gesatule before he realized it had hit his unknown attacker. Instinctively, he ducked his head. Gesatule took that moment, with one known attacker and one unknown attacker down, to head for the door. Kyle turned to draw an aim again and found his target halfway out the door. Kyle pulled the trigger and buried a bullet in the door frame inches from Gesatule’s retreating back. He rose stepping across the other attacker, whom he assumed to be dead, heading for the door after the murder.

That was the kid’s first mistake. In his defense though how could he know that Gesatule had missed his real target. Thresh didn’t know how Gesatule could have known his cover, but that was pretty much a worthless point now. Thresh took a second to draw his tranq-gun and crept up to the door behind the two. The other patrons of the bar were still crouching under their tables and chairs, but soon they would get brave again and that is something he didn’t have time for. Looking through the door he saw Gesatule heading for his car with the kid not more than twenty steps behind him. It looked like the kids gun had jammed, because his was working it trying to get a round chambered. Thresh took that as his chance and busted through the door, less than ten feet behind the kid. He drew down on Gesatule and fired a dart into his upper thigh. That took care of him. Even a man of his bulk couldn’t take a shot like that without dropping in a few seconds. The kid, still intent on his gun, didn’t even notice the dart. He did however notice when Thresh lunged after him and slapped the cuff around his right wrist. Thresh dropped the tranq-gun and grabbed the kid by the left shoulder. Using the cuff he pulled the kids right hand up behind his back. Just then Thresh’s arm lit up with electricity. It was like holding onto a light socket and turning it on. Thresh involuntarily yanked up on the kid’s arm and heard a pop.

ARRRRGGHHH!!!! Kyle could feel his right shoulder dislocate. He dropped his gun and tried to turn to his right to relieve some of the pressure off of it, but whoever had him by the left shoulder wouldn’t let go, even after a full electrical blast. It would hours before Kyle could generate enough strength for another blast, as it was he could hardly stand. Sliding his hand up his leg he drew a small knife and swung back at his attacker just as his attacker was saying something…

..Arrest!!! Stop resisting arrest!! Thresh saw the glint of the knife too late. That electrical surge had dulled his response time and this kid was fast, though he seemed to have slowed some. The knife glanced across his ribs on his left side. He slapped the knife out of the kid’s hand and yelled, You are in violation of the non-aggression pact for this zone. You are under arrest. As he was saying that it seemed like his legs just melted out from under him and he slumped to the ground.

Arrest?!? Your an enforcer? Saints!!! I attacked an enforcer! Oh god.. Dude, get up. No don’t die…. SHIT!!! Kyle reached down and grabbed the enforcer as he slid down. Under arrest, uh yeah… perhaps we should talk about that after we get you to a hospital…
