This is a picture of the first atomic bomb. In this picture there is a lot going on, but I can’t focus on most of it because all I see is the striped shirted guy lounging around.
Just to be clear, that is a 14 kila-ton bomb. The tower that he is leaning on was effectively gone and the sand under it was glass when this went off. You have to be pretty comfortable around something as powerful as that to just be hanging out like that.
kila-ton?! “Kilo” is the metric measurement that denotes 1000, I’m afraid I’m unfamiliar with this vernacular. 🙂
Whoops… I wonder if I got that off of the Wiki article. Oh well the point is the same.
Atomic bombs are extremely hard to detonate. It’s much easier for the bomb to not go off when they want it to explode than for the bomb to accidentally explode.
It could literally be dropped from a plane and without being ‘primed’ the bomb would not explode.
Also, he has no reason to be nervous. Remember it’s the first one, they don’t know how much damage it will do at that point, if any.
